LEDs & Art

post2330889243001438160491Carnival Arts Masters in Lublin , which promotes the work of the New Circus, closed in July 2015 with an unprecedented box office success. Fifty artists - acrobats, jugglers, clowns and illustrators showed about 150 performances. Most of them - in the Old City during evening time. Summing up, the organizers noted that in addition to the beauty of art visitors were entices by lighting. For the first time this year, all decorations created for the cultural event were illuminated by LED lights. The historic area of the city was lightened by 360 LED lamps and LED RGB strips, including a number of stages with intelligent lighting control systems.
In addition, the area of Po Farze was decorated with 220 illuminated umbrellas suspended at a height of 4 meters. The platform for light shows and concerts was floodlit every night with 16 million colours.

LEDs - Smart and Fast

post2210294968001438088144The growing influence of the Internet industry (which connects the physical and digital worlds) leads to designs that combine LED lighting and the method of data transmission using wireless sensors. When used in a particular environment, this kind of infrastructure is capable of much more than just lighting, providing real benefits for the safety of citizens.
Examples of the successful application of LED for safety are already realised in the city of Bauru in Brazil.

Bauru - is a city located in the state of Sao Paulo, which is one of the most densely populated areas of the country with high volumes of traffic. To eliminate traffic accidents, the city and its partners have transformed 2 000 traffic lights to LED. This technology provides the ability to reduce energy consumption up to 80%, and increase the speed signal to 10 times. At the same time, coverage of more transparent and clear, and it does not distract the driver, as in Brazil the sunlight is quite intense.

Multicoloured Bathtube

post1900089542001434272726Scientific studies have proven that electromagnetic waves might have a positive effect on the human body and have a relaxing and revitalizing effect. Chromotherapy is administrated by of LEDs lamps and colour filters of different colours. For example, red colour has a positive effect on red blood cells. Thanks to the green, blue and orange colours human body calms down and releases accumulated during day tension. Yellow, in turn, stimulates and creates a good mood. A purple tint is good for creative individuals, it is able to inspire and give push to the inventive. Using the lighting in the bath, you can calm the nervous system or, on the contrary, cheer it up. RGB LEDs can change the colours of the rainbow and you can choose the preferred of bathroom lighting.

LED Waterfall

item10The renewed monumental waterfall of the Italian resort town Santa Maria di Leuca was opened after renovation. One of the most beautiful places in Italy undergone a work of artistic LED lighting. The artistic p roject opening on May 15, 2015 was attended by Italian political and religious leaders.

The waterfall’s LED lighting project in the Santa Maria di Leuca was developed by «Enel Sole». Design of the project consist of about three hundred LED lights arranged in a cascade manner, the beams are directed at the most striking elements of the artistically waterfall - the river bed and Obelisk waterfall promenade around the source.

Many tourists and local people came to see the opening of the LED waterfall and in the summer season it will gather thousands of visitors because the waterfall not only one of the most beautiful places in Italy but with the new LED lighting system it looks really unique.

LED upgrade

item9One of the biggest UK stadiums will be completely upgraded for the coming football season 2015-2016. The huge sports facility is about to replace the outdated lighting system with a new one made by modern LED technology. LED-spotlights installed around the perimeter of the stadium, will serve for ten seasons, whereas previously installed metal halide lamps had to be completely replaced every three seasons.

Players and fans will have the opportunity to evaluate the new LED lighting system of the stadium, when the major professional sports site will provide the right level of illumination. The use of LED technology will allow viewers to see the athletes during the game with more complete perception, and the function of the electronic control of the lighting system will allow to emphasize the sharp points of the game and get a better lightening conditions for broadcasting the game around the world.

FIlament LED bulbs

item8LED lighting gradually comes into our lives. A few years ago it was hard to imagine that the streets, government facilities, transportation will be illuminated by LEDs. Now this is an accomplished fact. With high probability soon the whole world is almost completely will switch to LED lighting.

The first household LED lamps under standard socket E27 and E14 had had some disadvantages: uncomfortable lighting color, low color rendering index (CRI), leading to the misperception of colors surrounding objects, pulsation (flashing light), the inability to work with switches having a light and brightness.
Just over a year ago, the first lamp on the new generation of LED strands (filament) were introduced. LED filament represent a sapphire or glass base with a multiple diodes (Chip on Board). The capacity of each thread - 1 W. There is a miniature electronic circuit board with voltage transformer in the lamp cap.

LED bulbs with the filaments has almost complete resemblance to classic incandescent lamps both in appearance and on the radiation pattern. Filamentous emitters are very similar to an incandescent lamp filament.

The Nobel Prize for LEDs

item7Laureates of Nobel Prize in Physics in 2014, become Japanese scientists Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano, and Shuji Nakamura. The award was given for the invention of the blue LED and energy-efficient light sources, said the Nobel Committee of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

"Nobel laureates awarded for the creation of energy-saving and environmentally friendly light sources - blue light-emitting diodes (LED)", - said in a press release posted on the website committee.

According to a press release, the work of scientists helped to create and start commercial use of blue LEDs in the early 1990s. Existed back then the red and green diodes were not able to reproduce all shades of colours, including a light perceived by the human eye as white. The invention of a blue LED established, among other things, LED lamps and LED-backlit displays.

An innovative approach to lighting museum halls with LED-technology.

contentStdelMuseum01Lighting system of museum halls imposes very stringent requirements. Light in a museums and galleries must perform the following tasks: to shape the space, create the correct perception of the exhibits and not to harm exhibited objects. The light should not be too bright, because everyone knows that bright light is contraindicated ancient works of art.

Museum lighting problem solved in different ways, especially successful is the use of modern LED-technology.

Located in Frankfurt Museum of Classical and Contemporary Art has recently opened a new underground room, which is not only a very large area (3,000 sq. Meters) and high ceilings (8.2 meters), but also has a very interesting lighting solutions. The underground area is illuminated during the day in a natural way. To do this in the ceiling were made 200 round portholes diameter of 1.5-2.5 meters, which sunlight penetrates to lighten up the hall below. The lighting did not change on cloudy days or in the early evening because around the edges of each window LED elements were installed to provide a constant level of illumination for the entire duration of the gallery. All exhibits have their own special lighting led-modules.

Colour Temperature

item6For those applications where colour is important (lighting of premises and promotional materials), you should consider this option as the colour temperature. It is Indicates either in Kelvins (K) or descriptive (warm, neutral or cool white colour).

Warm White (2000-3000 K) - the colour temperature close to light produced by incandescent lamps (yellowish tint), so these lamps are ideal for direct replacement lamps or supplement with minimal change colour. Warm light helps to relax - this is an excellent option for overhead lighting in the room or as a bedside lamp.

Neutral white (3000-5000 K) light is most often used to illuminate work surfaces (desk or kitchen). Convenient  to use it for street lighting at night as well.

Cool White (above 5000 K) light with a bluish tint is used to replace or substitute the natural (solar) lighting. These lamps are used in offices, for lighting outdoor advertising,  and in postprocessing/printing industries.

Ceiling LED-panels

Quality and modern solutions such as LED panels, easily find their place in many offices. These devices feature a stylish design execution: they are ultra-thin and fit into most business interiors. From this list of advantages is just beginning.

High reliability and durability - this is what a item4light panels can boast of. Good news for the buyer - minimal service costs. There are more profits as well. Panels create a uniform light, and the work of LED panels is not accompanied by an annoying humming noise - it has a positive effect on people's health and, consequently, on the performance of the organization, where such devices are installed. The colours of light that will emit devices also can be chosen: cool white, warm white, daylight.

Advantages of LED panels are obvious:

LED lamp control with a smartphone!

item3Replacing incandescent lamps by modern LED lights is not a surprise anymore. The major advantage of LED lamps, except much-increased lifespan and ultra-low power consumption, is the possibility to converting them into some “intelligent” devices by combining with electronic components.

It was the idea of the developers of LED Bluetooth Bulb. The most modern Bluetooth 4.0 allows you to control the bulb from any mobile device (smartphone, tablet, laptop) using a special application.

Wireless Bluetooth module allows you to control a lamp or even a network of lights at a distance of up to 50 meters! Just download the appropriate application on your smartphone, and establish a connection with the bulb or bulbs network.

With the application you will be able not just switch a light bulb on and off, but also to regulate its brightness and RGB-model even allows you to change the color of the lamp.

So far, Bluetooth Bulb is still a prototype but developers are planning to start its mass production, presenting consumers with all popular fixtures - E27, E14, GU10, MR16, MR11 and capacity from 3.5 to 7 watts.

Moods affected by color of light

RedLightsPeopleNightShiftsWork or reading by the blue and white light can lead to depression, and red light and darkness affect mood less, according to a paper published in the Journal of Neuroscience.

"Working at night can lead the brain mood regulating area to receiving signals in the time of day when they should not do. “Perhaps, therefore, night lighting leads some people to depression," - explained Tracy Bedrozian from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego (USA).

There ate so-called ganglion cells on eye’s retina. They perceive the light and use it to adjust the biological "clock" of the body. There is evidence that these cells may be related to areas of the brain that are conducting our mood and emotions.
Bedrozian and her colleagues traced the lighting of different colors affect the behavior of hamsters. They forced the animals spend nights in different conditions: one week in the dark, followed by week in subdued light blue, white (similar to light bulbs) and red. Then hamster’s moods were tested by giving them sweet syrup, which they drink when they are fill less depressed.

The results showed that most hamsters drank sweet water when staying during night in the dark room or with red lightening. Blue and white light spoils the mood. The authors believe that the color of the light can also affect the mood of the people, particularly of those who work the night shifts. The scientists also advised to turn off at night computer screens, televisions and other sources of light.

LEDs for greenhouses

Growing plants at the technological level requires the use of efficient lighting technologies. LED lighting for greenhouses help obtain high quality harvests. Japanese scientists conducted experiments using LED lighting equipment for growing plants. During research they ascertained that the most dynamic growth caused by purple LED lights (panels of blue and red rows of diodes).
LED greenhouse lights have several advantages over other light sources. LED lighting is safer for greenhouse plants, even in the case of contact. Another advantage - a versatility that allows to grow hydroponics. In addition, LED lights for greenhouses do not require additional cooling while consuming minimal power.
In general, greenhouse LED lamps promote plant growth and stimulate the uptake of CO2. LED lighting for greenhouses accelerate vegetative growth and positive impact on the blooming.

Ceiling LEDs
Installation of suspended ceilings ought to include proper planning and organization of lighting. The lighting design can consist of not just traditional chandeliers, but spot, built-in lamps as well. In the best-case scenario, the light source should match style, interior, and had a great performance. Nowadays, the optimal way to satisfy all technical and aesthetic requirements for illumination is utilize of Light Emitting Diodes.

LEDceiling1It is important to keep in mind that stretch canvases, which are made of PVC film, are not designed to prolonged exposure to high temperatures. That's why experts strongly recommend refraining from using conventional halogen or incandescent bulbs. Such light sources emit large amounts of heat, which can cause discoloration of the stretch ceiling or even melting it. In this case, the ideal solution would be LED ceiling lights, as they emit virtually no heat.

Features of LED strips

LED strip consist of a flexible nonconductor base and two conductive copper foil buses, LEDs and resistors. Conductive buses usually powered by 12V DC. LEDs grouped together in 3 (sequentially connected), along with a resistor also sequentially connected with LEDs. This implies the following useful fact: LED strip can be cut into multiple groups of three LEDs without compromising their working capacity.

All groups of sequentially-connected LEDs and resistors are connected in parallel to the negative and positive buses i.e. if we will power up the LED strip with 12V, it will be on all LED groups in the same time. Assuming that the voltage is applied in the correct polarity: "plus" to the anode of the LED and "minus" to the cathode – LED strip will start to emit the light.

The most used current used in LED strips is 15-20 milliamps (mA). Brightness of the LED depends on the current and its directly proportional, therefore, if the current through the LED will change, for example, from 10 to 20 mA, then the brightness will be doubled as well. And another thing - even when the current three-fold (from 10 to 30 mA), the voltage across the LED is almost unchanged and amounts for different types of white LEDs will be between 3.0 to 3.5 V. Therefore, a chain of three diodes will get 9-10.5 V. i.e. diode current is determined by groups resistor. The difference between the voltage at the LED and power supply voltage determines the electrical current in each group of resistors and LEDs.
What can cause the lack of current on the LED chain? First, the voltage decreases gradually along the stripe because of the small cross section of the conducting buses. Second, the voltage decreases in the electrical system because of its lengths.
1) If you are going to use a LED Strip, do not use 5-6 meter piece, as they usually sold but cut it in two.
2) The greater the distance between the power supply and the LED strip connections, the bigger diameter of the wires you have to choose. For example, if the load power is 100 watts (about 20 meters standard tape) and the distance from the power supply to the connection point 10 meters, you will need a wire 6 mm2 in diameter. Then the losses on the wires will not exceed 40 % brightness.
